Westward Bound
Trevor Green Racing is preparing to head west to complete what has been a testing but productive 2009-10 World Series Sprintcars trail.
The WA leg will also end Ohio veteran Danny Smith’s tenure in the driving seat as he will return home directly from Perth following the final three WSS rounds.
The Chillicothe based Smith has continued to run the ADRAD US#4 Maxim towards the pointy end of the field during meetings in late January.
Smith scored seventh placing in the annual President’s Cup event at Avalon on January 20, before a brief appearance at the King’s Challenge in Mt Gambier where difficult conditions and an early accident had the team opting to save the car for the Grand Annual Classic over January 23-24.
Renewing his love for the high banks at Warrnambool, Smith finished as highest pointscorer on the Classic’s opening night, and after starting the 25-lap preliminary A-main from pole, eventually finished fourth, following a titanic battle for third with Brooke Tatnell.
On the following night, Smith started from fifth spot on the grid for the Classic 40-lap final ... an event he has previously claimed six times.
In another brilliant display of driving, Smith completed well over half distance of the quick paced race without brakes following a broken calipher, but managed to steer the ADRAD car home for a credible fifth place against a hot field.
On Australia Day, Smith again figured strongly as WSS competition resumed with Round 12 at Warrnambool.
After scoring a heat race victory, Smith was part of an all-American podium following home countrymen Terry McCarl and Wayne Johnson for third place.
A return to the team’s home track at Speedway City for the Australian Nationals event on January 30 proved disappointing.
Having secured third place in a heat, Smith started the B-main from position eight and impressively moved up into a transfer position after just three laps of the 20-lap journey around the Virginia clay way.
Unfortunately he was left with little room to move following an accident in front of him, and tagging a rolling car, also suffered attrition when another car slid into the US#4.
While the Maxim suffered damage to the wing and front end, the roll cage was also damaged, leaving Smith suffering a slightly bruised shoulder, resulting in the popular 52-year-old racing legend missing an A-main event for just the third time since he took over the driving chores on Boxing Day in place of the injured Trevor Green.
Smith currently sits in 14th place on the WSS pointscore, despite having missed the opening three rounds and remains a possibility of pushing for a top 10 overall finish through strong results at Kalgoorlie and the trail finale at Perth Motorplex on February 5-6.

Steady Run For Green Racing
Consistent results continued for Trevor Green Racing during the team’s recent venture along the east coast for January’s hot bed of sprintcar events.
Having finished in second place during the five-round Speedweek component of Performance Wholesale World Series Sprintcars, visiting American racing legend Danny Smith continued to run near the pointy end of the field during major meetings in NSW and Queensland.
Pedalling an ex Terry McCall Maxim chassis owned by Trevor Green, the 52-year-old from Chillicothe, Ohio, once again demonstrated his ability by being second quickest in time trials at the prestigious $50,000 event at Parramatta, and ended the opening night as the highest pointscorer, culminating in fourth place in the preliminary A-main feature.
Starting the second night’s big money 40-lap feature from third spot on the grid, Smith jumped the US#4 ADRAD car into the lead on lap three and maintained his advantage until mid race, when a series of cautions and stoppages enabled the chasing field, headed by eventual race winner World of Outlaws champion Donny Schatz to reel in Smith, who managed to hold on to a credible fifth spot.
A quick dash to Brisbane found Smith lining up for the Capalaba Cup mid-week meeting where he claimed third fastest time before being unfortunately caught up in an incident during the heats which damaged the car, leaving Smith to battle on towards registering eighth spot in the A-main race.
January 8-9 programmed the Australian Open at Brisbane International Speedway which doubled as Round 9 on the 2009-10 WSS trail.
Smith posted the quickest mark in time trials, before finishing fifth in the preliminary feature, the same position he attained in the A-main on the second night.
The team returned to Charlton Raceway in Toowoomba on January 10, the venue where Green suffered a serious back injury back in November which led to Smith filling the driver’s seat for the remainder of the WSS competition.
Again the American star was a model of consistency, filling fifth place on the Round 10 A-main.
The dual night Round 11 program at Parramatta produced a rather disappointing result for the team as Smith suffered a power steering pump failure on the opening lap of his time trial which virtually dropped the car out of any serious contention.
While Smith did manage a heat event on a less than impressive opening night track surface, he was consigned to a start in the C-main on Saturday night.
With the race distance reduced to just eight laps in a bid to beat threatening weather, Smith made a spirited dash from position 11 amid a field of 18 cars, and charged home in fifth spot.
However, he failed to make the transfer, resulting in the team missing a WSS A-main for the first time since Round 4 ... again displaying the steady and consistent run of the ADRAD car.
Green, Smith and Kansas based crew chief Brandon Inkenberry now head south for another busy schedule which includes the Presidents Cup at Avalon, the Kings Challenge at Mt Gambier, the time honoured Grand Annual Classic at Warrnambool ... an event Smith has claimed previously on six occasions while Green has one to his credit ... and Round 12 of WSS, also at Warrnambool on Australia Day, January 26.
The team will then make a rare home track stop over to compete in the Australian Sprintcar Nationals event at Adelaide’s Speedway City on January 30, before travelling west for the closing rounds of WSS at Kalgoorlie and the Perth Motorplex in early February.
As the steady results continue, Green is also making solid progress in his recovery from the back injury.
During the recent Parramatta meeting, he was able to be involved in the pits without the use of a restrictive back brace he has been forced to wear since the racing accident.
“It certainly is much better and I’ve been able to take the brace off for periods of time” outlined Green.
“I have an appointment with a specialist towards the end of January and hopefully we can get more into the next stage of rehab work, but the back is feeling a little stronger as each week unfolds.
“I have set myself a goal of possibly driving at the national title in Darwin in late May, but of course, I’ll be guided by medical advice ... there is a long term future involved but I am hoping I can get back as soon as I can.

Up To Speed
Trevor Green Racing produced a return of consistent results over the duration of the recent Speedweek component of Performance Wholesale World Series Sprintcars.
With Green still making a slow but steady recovery from a serious back injury incurred in Round 2 of the series at Toowoomba, American racing legend Danny Smith has been recruited for the remainder of the WSS trail and immediately reprised his past successes on Australian soil by finishing in overall second position in the Speedweek pointscore.
Opting to use an ex Terry McCall Maxim chassis purchased by Green, the 52-year-old from Indiana quickly displayed his renowned ability by picking up the pace at the opening round of Speedweek at Virginia’s Speedway City on Boxing Day.
Despite virtually having only just arrived from America, Smith piloted the US#4 ADRAD car to sixth spot in the time trials, before a sixth placing in his opening heat.
After having been caught up in a racing incident during his second heat, Smith began the A-main from 10th spot on the grid and finishing a credible sixth on a testing track.
The following night on a tight Murray Bridge venue, Smith was unfortunately forced to withdraw from the Round 5 feature due to a broken Jacobs ladder, having grabbed fifth spot in the pole shuffle.
Earlier in the night Smith had time trialled third fastest, before enduring mixed results in the heats, finishing sixth, and taking a slight tumble when left with nowhere to go after another competitor spun.
Round 6 at Mt Gambier’s Borderline Speedway also produced its challenges for the Green team, as Smith finished 10th fastest among a time trial session of 46 cars.
The Danville resident recorded fifth and second placings in his two heats, before again winning fifth spot in the pole shuffle.
In a fast and furious A-main which produced one of the best races witnessed at Borderline, Smith kept in touch with the leading bunch before a deflating tyre forced him to nurse the car home to finish in fourth spot.
On a very slick Avalon Raceway track on December 30, Smith was third fastest in time trials before earning a start from sixth place on the grid for the main event.
While eventual Round 7 winner David Murcott built up steady lead, Smith displayed experience and superb tactical driving by holding out the determined challenge of Avalon track specialist Matthew Reed to greet the chequered flag in second spot.
Smith kicked off a new racing year on January 1 at Warrnambool on a track he knows well, having won the Grand Annual Classic on a benchmark six occasions.
After he disappointingly time trialled 18th, Smith hit back with solid heat performances, grabbing a win and a second, while also working from sixth to second in the pole shuffle.
Having registered the highest points from the heat races, Smith backed up with a handy effort in the A-main, holding third spot for a lengthy period before being forced into fourth place through a late pass from fellow American Jason Johnson.
Smith’s results over the five rounds of Speedweek were rewarded with second place on the points table, tallying 696 points ... trailing Johnson’s winning total of 712.
After contesting five of the initial eight rounds of the 2009-10 WSS trail, Smith sits in 17th position, and now prepares to renew acquaintances with tracks on the eastern seaboard as Green Racing heads to meetings in Parramatta, Brisbane and Toowoomba.

Star Recruit On Deck
Trevor Green Racing is proud to announce the recruitment of American racing legend Danny Smith for the remainder of the World Series Sprintcar trail.
With Trevor making a slow but steady recovery from a severe back injury sustained in late November, Danny will step in to pilot the s#4 ARAD car commencing with the opening round of Speedweek on December 26 at Virginia’s Speedway City, a venue where he took out the corresponding WSS feature last season.
Danny Smith is one of the all-time greats of dirt track racing with the 52-year-old Indiana resident having commenced his career in 1974 at the age of 16.
He has been involved in the World of Outlaws since its inception in 1978 and besides competing coast-to-coast in the US, Danny has visited Australia on a regular basis since 1982.
He has won the Warrnambool Grand Annual Classic on six occasions, while having raced in WSS competition since it began in 1987-88.
His best overall WSS result is second place in 1994-95, while also finishing third in 1990-91 and 1996-97 and fourth in 1993-94.
Danny travels to join the Green Team in solid form, having contested 63 A-main events the past American season, winning 10, while having claimed a top 10 berth on 56 occasions.
“Ď am delighted to have a driver of the calibre of Danny to take over the driving role,” reflected Trevor after finalising the details.
“One of the major reasons is obviously Danny’s ability in a race car ... he is also pretty good on equipment, he knows the tracks and the format, and he is popular with the fans, which is another bonus for our team sponsors.
“Danny is due to arrive in Adelaide on Christmas Eve, and we plan to do about 24 shows together before he returns home in February.
“Due to being familiar with a Maxim frame, we are commissioning the Maxim I bought from Terry McCarl for Danny to run, so hopefully it won’t take long for him to slip into the groove, while his experience in setting up the car will also be beneficial.”
While head crewman Brandon Inkenberry prepares the Maxim, Trevor has been doing what he can to assist as he slowly recovers from the broken vertebrae sustained in the crash at Toowoomba.
“I am a little better, I’ve had a change of medication which has made me feel a lot better within myself, and while I know my limitations at the moment with the back brace, I am doing a bit to try and keep myself occupied.
“It’s been great to have a few calls from people who have suffered a similar injury, and it appears given the right amount of time to recover and following the rehab process, I hopefully should be able to return to racing, but that’s well down the track at this stage.
“I must admit it’s a bit frustrating at the moment not being able to get out there and do something I love, but I am at least keeping busy preparing for Danny’s arrival and hopefully looking forward to the Adrad s#4 being back among the leaders in the big events after Christmas.”

Positives For Green Team
Trevor Green Racing produced a steady performance during Round 3 of PWWSS held at Tyrepower Parramatta City Raceway on Saturday, December 5.
With past SA State champion Trevor Green slowly taking steps to recovery following a serious lower back injury sustained in the previous round at Toowoomba, Sydneysider Ian Madsen took over the driving role in the #s4 ADRAD Cool for the night.
Among a nominated field of 54 cars Madsen qualified 14th fastest, with his best lap of 11.995 ahead of some more fancied PWWSS rivals.
Madsen then claimed sixth spot during his opening heat before finishing fifth in his second outing, earning a direct path into the main event which he completed in 14th place.
Having been released late last week from hospital, Trevor was pleased to have the #s4 car complete its first PWWSS final of the 2009-10 series.
“Overall I was pretty happy with Ian’s efforts, while crew man Brandon Inkenberry and the whole team did a good job,” said Trevor post-meeting from Sydney.
In another positive Trevor will finally return home to his Two Wells base for the first time since suffering broken multiple vertebrae in a crash during the B-main at Toowoomba on November 28.
“I am gradually getting used to the brace I must wear for a minimum of 12 weeks, but I am really looking forward to flying home ... it has been a very hard time and a bit of a struggle but things are hopefully on the improve,” reflected Trevor.
“Once again the family and myself would like to thank all those who have offered their support and best wishes since the accident.”
While PWWSS takes a break before the annual Speedweek stage of the series after Christmas, Trevor Green Racing will continue negotiations both within Australia and the US to finalise a driver to fill the vacant #s4seat on a more permanent basis for the upcoming major sprintcar events.
